Thermoresponsive (Star) Block Copolymers from One Pot Sequential RAFT Polymerizations and their Self-Assembly in Aqueous Solution

A series of thermo-responsive, "smart" associative telechelics bearing hydrophobic dodecyl end groups is made from N,N-dimethyl- and N,N-diethylacrylamide. The well-defined block and star block copolymers could be synthesized by RAFT polymerization via a convenient one-pot procedure. The star arms feature an inner hydrophilic and an outer thermoresponsive block. Light and neutron scattering studies demonstrate responsive aggregation in aqueous solution, with the control of solution viscosity and gel formation. The extent of aggregation and the systems' viscosities are controlled by the macromolecular architecture.
